Inaugural Conference: Interdisciplinary Research on Violence Against Women

The Deakin Research on Violence Against Women (DRVAW) Hub is holding its Inaugural Conference: Interdisciplinary Research that addresses Family Violence. The conference is being facilitated by DRVAW Hub Co-Convenors: Dr Mary Iliadis, Dr Lata Satyen and Dr Danielle Tyson.

Keynote Speakers: Tania Farha (CEO Domestic Violence Victoria /Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria)

Tania Farha is the Chief Executive Officer of Domestic VIolence Victoria and Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria. Prior to this role, she was Executive Director for Multicultural Affairs and Social Cohesion and Equality in Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet. Prior to this appointment, she was the CEO of the Office of Prevention and Women’s Equality within the Department of Premier and Cabinet. Prior to joining the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Tania worked at UN Women for over four years as a policy specialist in the Ending Violence Against Women Section. Tania also worked for nine years with the Victoria Police, where she was responsible for the implementation of a number of reforms in relation to DRVAW program_FINALviolence against women and children including the development and implementation of specialised Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Teams and multi-disciplinary centres to respond to sexual assault and child abuse in the State of Victoria.

Professor Marilyn McMahon (Deputy Dean, Faculty of Law, Deakin University)

Marilyn McMahonMarilyn McMahon is a Professor and Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Law at Deakin University. She is also a registered psychologist. Her scholarship and publications are primarily in the areas of criminal law and procedure. She is a co-author of a textbook in Criminal Law and co-edited a book dealing with the increasing recognition of coercive control in criminal justice responses to family violence (Criminalising Coercive Control: Family Violence and the Criminal Law, with P McGorrery). She has presented papers at international and national conferences and seminars and in 2018 was awarded a Victorian Parliamentary Library Fellowship. In addition to her academic work, Marilyn has been appointed to several independent statutory bodies including the Mental Health Tribunal, the Forensic Leave Panel and the Intellectual Disability Review Panel. She is also a member of the Australian Forensic Reference Group, a diverse group of scientists from various disciplines who provide independent advice to Victoria Police. Marilyn earned her Doctorate (PhD) from La Trobe University, a Master of Forensic Psychology (M.Psych) and Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies (GDLP) from Monash University and a B.A.(Hons) in Psychology and LL.B (Law) from the University of Melbourne.
